Are There Stripes in Heaven?
Published in Paperback by Paulist Press (November, 1994)
Authors: Lee Klein and Pam Mauseth
Average review score:

Change Your Life and Your Child's Life with the Book
Do you have a child who is different? Many answer the question regretfully with a "yes". This book, by master storyteller and ethicist Lee Klein, shows us all why we should all embrace "YES" as the only answer. We are each unique under God's Heaven, and Ms. Klein shows us and our children, beautifully and simply how that is so.
I know many parents with children with disabilities or extraordinary abilities who read this book out of curiousity. In every instance it changed their lives for the better. Mine too.

Arranging the Score: Portraits of the Great Arrangers
Published in Hardcover by Cassell Academic (May, 2000)
Authors: Gene Lees and Jeffrey Sultanof
Average review score:

Who's behind those Star performances?
As a fine script and make-up is essential to the box office success of film stars, so is the musical arranger to the entertainment field. Think about the songs you sing, your favorite recording artists, the music sound track behind your favorite movie, etc, etc, etc. None would capture your fancy without the music arranger whom you never see or meet. This book allow us to meet a few great arrangers through succinct essays. Say hello to Les Brown, Henry Mancini, Jerry Mulligan, and Johnny Mandel just to mention a few. Then immerse yourself in the music world of the big band era, films and even step into a studio with back up singers. You'll never again toss away the talented folk behind the scenes whose arrangements set the tone, timbre, rhythm, harmonies and mood for your viewing, singing, dancing, listening pleasure. Ricki Martin? Frank Sinatra? Rosemary Clooney? Miles Davis? Satchmo? Christina Aguilera? Diana Ross? Barbra Streisand? Judy Garland? Trust me, all are defined, and refined by the true stars, THE ARRANGERS!!!! Gene Lees and Jeffrey Sultanof have delivered a clever technical precise informative piece. I like this book.

Arrogance on the Battlefield: A Primary Cause of Defeat, 1775-1991
Published in Hardcover by Arms & Armour (March, 1997)
Author: J. Lee Ready
Average review score:

Excellent history.
(The above numerical rating is a default setting of Amazon's format. This reviewer does not employ numerical ratings.)

Military defeats are often ascribed to rational errors of miscalculation, but Mr. Ready convincingly demonstrates that the underlying cause is often a prideful self confidence combined with a contemptuous underestimation of one's adversaries. Assembled here is a fine collection of such costly misjudgements as First Manassas, Little Big Horn, Singapore, and Desert Storm, carefully analyzed with their causes and consequences.

Beautifully researched and eminently readable, as is Mr. Ready's "World War Two: Nation by Nation", and his other works.

Arrow Pointing North
Published in Paperback by Four Way Books (01 January, 2002)
Author: David Dodd Lee
Average review score:

Another compelling book from our most tender maverick...
It's hard to articulate precisely what makes this book so special, but ultimately it comes down to a voice at once confident and modest, who dares to be tender where other male poets of his generation fail. Here are poems possessed so strongly by a blazing sense of humanity that they strike me as completely maverick in their approach. He writes about nature and desire (and their intersection- which is the wellspring he so brilliantly draws from) in a way that simply, no one ever has before, and this alone makes him a true American original.
Endearing and fierce , this book works a slow, cumulative magic and deserves to be read and read and read.

Art Glass Nouveau
Published in Hardcover by Charles E Tuttle Co (December, 1967)
Authors: Ray Grover and Lee Grover
Average review score:

Art Glass Nouveau - A Treat for the Eyes
Art Glass Nouveau was written by a husband and wife team, Lee and Ray Glover. They have photographed museum quality glass art from the late 1800's - 1930. This is the time period art lovers call Art Nouveau - or the new art.

The pictures are breathtakingly gorgeous, in full color. The text is outstanding in that it not only gives information about the artist (included are the most famous) but tells some of the details of how the glass was formed.

After reading this beautiful book I feel much more knowledgeable about how these treasures were created, yet no less in awe of their creator. I wonder how and from what heavenly body these artists came from.

If antique dealors knew of this book, they would certainly be clawing to get at it! Too bad it is out of print! Actually it has been brought back once already, in 1975.

It is a delight to view, it is abundant in information, and is well written.

The Art of Inquiry: Questioning Strategies for K-6 Classrooms
Published in Paperback by Peguis Pub Ltd (December, 1995)
Author: Nancy Lee Cecil
Average review score:

An Essential Guide To Questioning
"A young child enters school as a question mark and leaves as a period" - but not children who have teachers incorporating The Art of Inquiry into their classrooms. Nancy Cecil provides readers with examples of types and levels of questions which are immediately useful in working with students. She describes the ideal climate for questioning in practical and applicable terms. Perhaps the richest half of Cecil's excellent resource for educators is the one with chapters full of questioning strategies. Her guidelines for primary and intermediate strategies as well as questioning in specific subject areas, help turn on the light for those who have been asking students queries in the dark. For schools pursuing the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme which is dedicated to the inquiry approach, this book is a "must have" source of ideas.

The Art of Nellie Mae Rowe: Ninety-Nine and a Half Won't Do
Published in Hardcover by Museum of American Folk Art (December, 1998)

Nellie May Rowe: conceptual art and transcendental imagery
In January I visited New York City for a few days. One night my friend and I happened to walk past the Museum Of American Folk Art, and saw something going on inside that involved wine and cheese. We took the bait, paid our admission/donation and joined the tour of the exhibit, which to our tremendous enjoyment, was the artwork of Nellie May Rowe,. The tour was given by the author of this book, Lee Kogan. Not only was this most definitely one of the best things I ever did on the spur of the moment, but the book is one of the nicest things I ever purchased on impulse.

Nellie May Rowe's art combined with Lee Kogan's insight make for a powerful and strangely personal experience. We are given mystifyingly beautiful portraits of a woman's inner life and outer circumstance. The images embrace and thereby transcend the small human details that , by the nature of the beast itself, exist to be integrated into what I believe is the creation of real magic. Real magic doen't take shortcuts.

Lee Kogan graciously signed the book for my daughter, saying that Nellie May Rowe's energy, spirit and marvelous art inspire us all, and this is certainly true: If I may be so bold as to take a quote from the book, from the writings of James Baldwin: "..go back to where you started, or as far back as you can, examine all of it, travel your road again and tell the truth about it. Sing or shout or testify or keep it to yourself; but know whence you came"

Yeah. What he said. Anyways, do right by yourself, get your own copy because I'm not gonna be lending out mine anytime soon!

Asha's Mums
Published in Paperback by Women's Press (2000)
Authors: Rosamund Elwin, Michele Paulse, and Dawn Lee
Average review score:

Raises Awareness About Gay/Lesbian Families
ASHA'S MUMS by Elwin and Paulse is the story of a little girl, who is told by her teacher to have her field trip permission slip which was signed by her two mums re-done "correctly." While there is a bit of a mystery about what "correct" exactly means, the teacher blatantly tells Asha she can't have two mums, and if the form is not filled out correctly, she cannot go on the trip. Clearly Asha is devastated because she believes she, her brother, and her two mums are a family, and she wants to go on the trip. The next day, Asha tries to explain her family. This provokes discussion among the children abut whether or not a child can have two mums. One child says her parents told her that having two mothers living together is bad. While the class is in gym, Asha's mums have a talk with the teacher to clarify their family structure. Asha is able to go on the trip and the other children are informed that both of her mums are important to her. This books makes an important statement: children from gay- and lesbian-headed households do not always make distinctions between their parents such as the "real" mother or father. Parents are frequently distinguished most commonly by names, such as "Mama" and Mom" or "Papa" and "Daddy." ASHA'S MUMS is one of a few books which raises the issue of children's families not being accepted or represented in the classroom. It also highlights the difficulties children of gay and lesbian families encounter when their parents have not disclosed their family structure to the school or teacher. Some readers may feel a little uneasy that it was initially left up to Asha and some of her friends to defend and explain her family structure. Still, this may very well be the reality for some children from gay- and lesbian-headed families, especially as parents are not yet aware of the need to explain their family until a "crisis" occurs. The wonderful illustrations add to the beauty of the story. They portray Black, Asian, Latino/a and European-American children. This story works well with a discussion on exclusion, acceptance and diverse family structures.

ASP.NET 1.0 Namespace Reference with C#
Published in Paperback by Wrox Press Inc (July, 2002)
Authors: Amit Kalani, Dave Gerding, Matt Milner, Bruce Lee, Matt Gibbs, Jason Bell, John Schenken, Andy Elmhorst, Mike Clark, and Alex Homer
Average review score:

Great reference with examples
Finally, a book I have been looking for; a readable reference with solid examples. Does a great job on the namespaces it covers. Looking forward to similiar books to cover additional namespaces. This is not a tutorial. Gets straight to the point and provides you with the information you need to use a class and its associated methods and properties. Provides just enough background to provide context for the namespaces referenced. If you are interested in a reference that show you what namespace to use for a particular purpose and concisely shows you how to use the namespace, then this book is for you.

Aspects of European History, 1789-1980
Published in Hardcover by Routledge Kegan & Paul (May, 1983)
Author: Stephen J. Lee
Average review score:

War and Peace and everything in between
This book consists of 36 essays, starting with the French revolution, and going up to modern times, passing through most historically important matters. Examples of essays are 'The Collapse of the Second French Empire' or 'German Foreign Policy 1918-1939'. It is intended for students and general interest readers. In the introduction, Lee says that the chapters (read essays) were 'built up step by step', so that each paragraph represents a 'stage in the argument'. The essays are well written, and their content is a good balance of the basic facts and interesting information that might be difficult to find elsewhere.
